Abstract:
This paper presents a discussion on the influence of the work of Jürgen Habermas for criminological theory-building in the abolitionist movement. First, a short introduction to the main elements in Habermas's critical theory is offered. Next, it is explored in what way Habermas's thoughts have been used in theoretical contributions to the abolitionist perspective. Attention is especially focused on the way in which Habermas's notions of system and lifeworld come into abolitionist analyses. Finally, some problems and criticisms are identified with regard to applications of Habermas's theory in abolitionist criminology.
