INTRODUCTION:
Squamous cell carcinomas of the oral mucosae are among the most frequent malign tumours arising in the oral and maxillofacial region. With aid of database related documentation, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies as well as comparisons with other collectives can be realized much easier.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
The retrospective study comprises the medical histories of 373 patients with primary, untreated squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. The selected cases were determined by the criteria of the German-Austrian-Swiss-Group on Tumours (DÖSAK). The acquisition of data was realized with medical records, the subsequent documentation was done with a relational database (MS Access).
RESULTS:
With respect to the valence of a retrospective study no statistical significant differences were found with regard to the 5 year survival rates compared to other studies, especially to the DÖSAK - collective. For radically operated patients 5 year survival reached 58%. The special importance of lymph node metastasis with extracapsular spread became obvious considering a poor 5 year survival rate of 22%. Of same weight seemed to be the decline of the 5 y-s-r from 46% in R0-resection to 10% in R1-resections. The overall recurrence-rate measured 17,7%, only slightly topping that of the DÖSAK-collective.
CONCLUSIONS:
Internationally compared the diagnostic and therapeutic concept chosen in the Department of Oral- and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital Tuebingen seems to prove good with respect to the recurrence rates and cumulated 5-year-survival rates.
